We were supposed to start the day with a driving tour of the city, taking in the Olympic Games complex, the marinas, Christopher Columbus’ statute looking out to the sea and the Moorish inspired twin towers amongst other locations. Due to the World Cup game having been played and televised in the city centre the night before, most of the roads were closed off. Those that weren’t, were strewn with plastic beer cups and hot dog rolls. There was no one to be seen on any of the streets, barring a few weary looking police officers, manning portable barriers and directing traffic. It was a rather bizarre scene, the streets of Barcelona being so dead, given it was around nine in the morning, on a weekday. You’d have been forgiven for thinking it was siesta time, in a way, I guess it was, a kinda post beer-y siesta at that. Continue reading →
